Music that breathes
and lingers

Peter Gross is a solo acoustic guitarist based in Ashland, Oregon — a musician with 30 years of pursuit spanning performance, composition, and contemplation. After decades fronting and co-founding ensembles from Portland to the Bay Area, he returned to the instrument that started it all.

In early 2024, Peter picked up his acoustic guitar with fresh ears, exploring open tunings and a stream-of-consciousness approach to composition. The result is music that values tonality, space, and emotion above all else.

"When the music is talking to you, best to not get in the way."

Thirty Years
of Sound

A journey from a five-year-old picking up his first guitar to the intimate, open-tuned acoustic compositions of today.

"A 30-year pursuit encompassing performance, composition, and contemplation."

Peter Gross began playing guitar at age five, returning to formal lessons at thirteen after childhood studies in piano, trumpet, baritone horn, and drums. From the beginning, music wasn't a hobby — it was the language that made the most sense.

What followed was three decades of restless collaboration and reinvention: punk-influenced high school recordings on a Tascam 4-track, a genre-bending jazz quartet in Portland, West Coast touring with folk artists, hip-hop stages in Oakland and Berkeley, and a string of adventurous ensemble projects back home in Ashland, Oregon.

In early 2024, Peter set down the band projects and picked up an acoustic guitar with fresh ears. Working in open tuning with a stream-of-consciousness compositional approach, he found a voice that had been waiting patiently through all those years of playing with others. The result is music that feels both new and deeply familiar — warm, layered, and unhurried.

A Life in
Music

Early Childhood

The First Instruments

Peter began with piano, then worked through trumpet and baritone horn before settling on drums. Guitar entered the picture at age five — the instrument that would become the throughline of everything that followed. Formal guitar lessons began at thirteen.

High School & Early College

First Recordings

Using a Tascam 4-track recorder, Peter began capturing original music in bedrooms and basements — an early introduction to the idea that composition and recording were inseparable crafts. The rawness of those sessions taught him that capturing feeling mattered more than technical perfection.

Mid-1990s · Portland, OR

Michael Peters Quartet

Co-founded the genre-bending Michael Peters Quartet in Portland, navigating the intersection of jazz, folk, and alternative sounds that defined that city's fertile mid-90s music scene. The ensemble pushed Peter's compositional thinking well beyond any single genre.

Ashland, OR — West Coast Tours

Oregon Country Fair & Strawberry Festival

Embedded in Ashland's thriving local scene, Peter toured the West Coast supporting folk artist Alice DiMicele and performed at landmark venues including the Strawberry Music Festival and the Oregon Country Fair — outdoor stages that shaped his understanding of how music connects with an audience.

Santa Cruz, CA

Synchrosystem

Co-founded Synchrosystem alongside mandolinist Christian Runge in Santa Cruz, blending acoustic stringed instruments with broader sonic palettes. The project deepened Peter's relationship with layered, textural music-making.

Bay Area, CA

Otis Goodnight

Joined Otis Goodnight, a 10-piece Hip-hop and R&B ensemble, performing in Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco. Playing in a large ensemble with tight arrangements and groove-driven music broadened Peter's rhythmic vocabulary and his sense of how a guitar can serve a collective sound.

Return to Ashland, OR

Ensemble Years

Back in Ashland, Peter founded and joined a string of eclectic projects: Funkamungus (10-piece funk collective), uPhonic Soundsystem (downtempo electronica), Deep Sea (original Psych-Funk), and Living Loving Led (Led Zeppelin tribute). Each project was a complete world unto itself.

2024 — Present

Return to the Acoustic Guitar

In early 2024, Peter returned to solo acoustic guitar — this time with open tunings and a stream-of-consciousness compositional approach. Setting aside theory and judgment, he let the music lead. The result: "Dreamy, Multi-layered Acoustic Guitar" with forward-moving rhythms, rich textures, and a quality of deep listening baked into every note.

The Approach

When the music is talking to you, best to not get in the way.

— Peter Gross

Peter's compositional method begins with non-judgment and simplicity. Rather than imposing structure onto a piece, he follows where the music leads — using open tuning as a foundation that naturally suggests resonance and harmonic color, then layering rhythms and textures through a fingerpicking style built over decades.

The elements he values most aren't the obvious ones: rhythm and melody theory take a back seat to tonality, sound quality, the use of space and air, and emotional resonance. He describes his goal simply: to play it exactly as he heard it — to let the music arrive fully formed, then capture it faithfully.

The result is music with a distinctly organic quality — forward-moving but unhurried, layered but never cluttered, dreamy but grounded in real wood and real strings.
